All Saints' Day||All Hallows' Day||2022

2022-11-01 13:04:38

The Christian holiday known as All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows' Day, Hallowmas, or the Feast of All Saints, honours all the church's saints—both well-known and obscure—who have attained paradise. In Western churches, it is observed on November 1; in Eastern churches, it is observed on the first Sunday following Pentecost. The feast is often a holy day of obligation in Roman Catholicism.

The focus of All Saints' Day celebrations tends to be on known saints, that is, those included in the Catholic Church's canon of saints, despite the fact that millions or possibly billions of people may already be saints.

Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church as well as several protestant faiths, such the Lutheran and Anglican churches, observe All Saints' Day.

In general, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, which means that everyone who practises Catholicism is obligated to go to Mass on that day, unless they have a compelling reason not to, such a life-threatening sickness.

History of All Saint’s Day

Pope Boniface IV sanctified the day and commanded an anniversary to honour the Virgin Mary and all the martyrs on May 13 in the year 609 or 610 A.D. He may have selected May 13 since it was already a popular day for memorialising martyrs and the deceased in many Eastern churches. When Pope Gregory III (690-741 A.D.) established an oratory in St. Peter's at the Vatican to glorify the apostles, saints, martyrs, and "all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world," he also changed the date of All Saints' Day from October 31 to November 1 on the Old Style calendar.

All Saints' Day became a recognised holiday in several Christian sects and denominations during the course of the years and decades that followed thanks to the influence of numerous powerful individuals in the church and the government. Depending on the region and branch of the church, today's celebration is also known as All Hallows' Day, Hallowmas, the Feast of All Saints, and the Solemnity of All Saints.
